Westerly Merlin Sandbagger - Layout

Westerly Merlin Sandbagger Layou

Sandbagger was designed by Ed Dubois, who created the more modern style of the Westerly range. As such, she is similar in layout to most modern yachts with a V-berth forward cabin, large double aft cabin and two bunks in the saloon that can be used for sleeping.

In particular, she has a great sized heads compartment and hot and cold pressurised water meaning you can shower too.

SALOON

The saloon has seating for 6 around a folding table. The port seat has an infil that Westerly claim creates a double berth but I would rate as an extra wide single.

The saloon was re-headlined and re-upholstered in 2016 and is in great condition. It is carpeted and curtained. The four windows were removed and re-sealed in 2016.

There is ample storage under and behind all seats and a CO2 alarm fitted.

GALLEY

Situated to port, aft of the saloon seating is a wrap-around style galley with twin burner cooker with oven and grill, ample storage for pots & pans etc under the sink.

The sink has a mixer tap with pressurised hot and cold water and there is also a foot pump to conserve batteries when sailing. Food storage is to the rear of the cooker and, to the left of the cooker is a large vertical cupboard for cutlery, tools etc.

In the end of the sink unit (as can be seen from the photo above) there is a storage cupboard for kitchen utensils.

There is a flourescent light over the cooker and a cool box to the right of the cooker.

WET LOCKER

To starboard, opposite the galley is a large wet locker for oilies etc. It has a hanging rail and four clothes hooks. It normally contains our life jackets and oilies etc.

There is also a fire extinguisher and stowage for a worktop infil that slots over the cooker when it is not in use creating extra worktop space.

AFT CABIN

Situated to port aft of the galley. Unlike a lot of boats of her size, Sandbagger has a completely separate aft cabin with shelf stowage and a great sized hanging locker with hooks and a hanging rail. The berth is a very good size with a section of it running below the cockpit sole (I am just under 6'5" and can sleep quite comfortably in here with my wife).

There are two reading lamps either side of the cabin and battery stowage beneath the berth. There is a 12 volt power outlet next to the battery switches that can just be seen in the picture.

This cabin was completely re-lined in 2015.

FORWARD CABIN

They say two singles but I'd say a double as I've never slept in this cabin without the infil!

As with the aft cabin, there is plenty of room for two in the forward cabin. There is a large volume of stowage under the side cushions and along the shelves as can be seen from the picture.

There are two reading lights either side of the cabin.

CHART TABLE

The chart table is situated facing aft on the starboard end of the salooon. The fold-open desk gives access to charts and navigation instruments and is plenty large enough for all chart work.

As can be seen to the left, VHF radio, AIS radar and GPS (Navtex just out of view!) are fitted, with the Westerly electrical control panel to hand. Switches for auto-pilot power and other equipment on the left.

The auto pilot is linked to the Garmin GPS and can steer according to your waypoints.

HEADS

The heads compartment is a real bonus on a yacht this size. It features a Jabsco sea toilet with all working parts replaced late 2016 and headlining replaced March 2017.

Hot & cold pressurised water to an extending shower nozzle and pump out floor drain. Plenty of storage above and below the wash basin.

Flourescent light above the sink was new in March 2017

ABOVE DECKS

The cockpit seats are teak laid and cockpit is surrounded by dodgers (new 2016) and sprayhood (re-glazed 2016). Reefing lines are led aft to the cockpit and the battened main is dropped into a lazy bag so a crew only needs to go for'ard to clip in a reefing point.

The fractional genoa is roller reefed from the cockpit
